They may think that they've filed a claim, that they've taken care of any statute of limitations problem because they've gotten this information from the division that says, oh, here's my injury number. Well, if you haven't filed a formal claim for compensation, that statute of limitations is still out there going, and you can really get in trouble that way.
And I think a lot of people probably do. There is a definable time for which you can bring a formal claim with the division. And that time is set, and there's some variation that can happen depending upon whether a report of injury was filed, when medical treatment was last provided. But there's a finite time, and you definitely have to consult an attorney early because if that time period lapses, it's lapsed, and you don't have any recourse.
